Born Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman, Andy Kaufman (b. January 17, 1949, New York City-May 16, 1984, Los Angeles) was a Jewish-American comedian, actor, professional wrestler and self-described "song and dance man" best known for his stand-up act and his work on the sitcom Taxi.
Fun Facts
- The fight between Kaufman and professional wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler during their appearance on the July 28, 1982 Late Night with David Letterman was planned, but only Kaufman and Lawler knew what was going to happen. As a result, Letterman's look of surprise was completely genuine.
- Jim Carrey portrayed Kaufman in 1999's Man on the Moon.
- R.E.M.'s song "Man on the Moon", from their 1992 album Automatic for the People, is about Kaufman.
