Lasse & Geir (Them and Us) is a social drama from 1976, directed by Svend Wam and Petter Vennerød. These are the masters of overstatement, who pride themself in never using a subtle approach in their movies. Torgeir Schjerven and Lasse Tømte stars as the titular characters, two troubled teenagers out on the streets of Oslo, with a rebellion against all there is. In Norway, the film was not and instant classic upon it’s release, but is today praised as one of the biggest cult-films due to it’s controversity and silly dialogue. The film is crappy made, with obvious errors and over-the-top acting, shown rather often in cinémathèques. The laughs come hard and heavy. The only positive about this film is that the film contains real oral sex, something that was cut away on later prints.

Invariably, the directors message is hammered home in converstaion which is hard-hitting, but utterly, completely artificial. The swearing and the coarse language adorn every line, and Marxist slogans are flung around like confetti. Wam & Vennerød also have a thing going against “regular people”, rendering them as little more than brain-washed zombies.

“Lasse & Geir” could well be the funniest political tract ever made in Norway, and most of the directors movies are treasure troves of screwy cinema for those who care to search them out.
