Before he became the director of one of the best comedy films of all time (The Blues Brothers), the most memorable music video of all time (Michael Jackson's Thriller), and one of the most notorious films of all time (Twilight Zone: The Movie, in which he accidentally killed two actors while filming), John Landis (Schlock) brought us a cult classic: The Kentucky Fried Movie. No, it doesn't have anything to do with that fast food franchise, but it's the very first movie of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker, the guys behind the successful comedy spoofs Airplane!, Top Secret!, and The Naked Gun franchise.
The whole film has no plot at all, it's random sketches range from the Brucesploitation spoof "A Fistful of Yen" to the "What would happened if news-anchor in two-way TV could see a couple having sex?". Also, it has elements of visual gags and literal jokes like in every Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker films. For example, in a fake trailer for a sexploitation called Catholic High School Girls in Trouble, when the announcer says "More exciting than Behind The Green Door", there's a guy that literally opens a green door and makes an excited face.
There are many sketches that I love in this film. One depicts a black couple who listen to a recorded how-to guide to have sex. Unfortunately, things go wrong and in the final scene, there's a black strong guy called "Big Jim Slade" who appears in their room because, according to the record, this guy never has a premature ejaculation problem. The next one is "Scot Free" a fake commercial for a board game based on the John F. Kennedy assassination. It reminds me of the hilarious "Nuke 'Em" commercial in first RoboCop movie.
There's another John Landis trademark in this film: The "See You Next Wednesday" ad is a running gag that's appeared in almost every John Landis film. From The Blues Brothers (as a billboard sign advertising new movie) to Michael Jackson's Thriller (as a dialogue in a film that Michael Jackson and Ola Ray are watching). In this one, it appears in a sketch called "Feel-A-Round" in which main characters go see a movie called "See You next Wednesday" while the usher does everything that a female character in the film does. From smoking, to spraying perfume, and even putting a knife to the viewers' neck! And what could be the best punchline to end this scene than "Feel-O-Rama invites you to stay for our next picture "Deep Throat!". Since that character is a guy, well, he runs away! This is a very entertaining and memorable film. Check it out.
