In the world of pornographic films, there are many sub-genres to watch like Comedy (Debbie Does Dallas), Epic/Historical (Caligula), War-Drama (Gestapo's Last Orgy), and Crime. Yep, thesubgenre re's an actual Crime-porn genre just like in the movie Boogie Nights. The Jade Pussycat is a very good example of it.
The Jade Pussycat is one of the films in the long-running "Johnny Wadd" franchise. What makes Johnny Wadd totally different than James Bond are the facts that Johnny is just a private detective, not a secret agent. Also, while 007 spends most of the time investigating things around him and (maybe) has sex with women under the blankets, Johnny has sex with the girl for almost 60-70% of his screen-time. From now on, if someone asks me "Which action flick character do you wanna be?", I would tell them Johnny Wadd for sure.
The main plot concerns The Jade Pussycat, an ancient Chinese jade carving, which was stolen from Japan and Johnny Wadd has to find out where it is. Surprisingly, it has a very good plot! It's not as good as classic detective films like Chinatown or L.A. Confidential but it's better than most of the 70's porn films. Also, this one has a twist and a cliffhanger ending (which means that we have to watch the next adventure of Johnny Wadd in The China Cat).
What about dialogue? Well, Johnny Wadd has a lot of memorable lines in this film, like the ending scene in which he says that "No matter how much an item is worth, it is not worth a human life. Something tells me that I should just throw it in the bay and be done with it, but again I'm only human and this thing is worth a lot of money." This is something that rarely appeared in porn films. But for those of you who just want to see sex scenes, you're also gonna love it for sure because it has very good cinematography and a superb soundtrack.
Finally, if the copyright holder of this film ever reads this review, please remaster it and release it on DVD/Blu-Ray. The copy that I watched has a VHS quality and the print itself is kind of red and faded. It should have been preserved in its finest condition since this movie is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
