*Originally, a "blood man" was brought in for the murder sequence of Janet Fay. The "blood man" hooked up tubes to Janet Fay's body that would end at her head in which were connected to a pump full of fake blood. Leonard Kastle said that "he wasn't that good of a blood man", whereas the blood would go spurting out in all directions, overall just doing it wrong. They ended up purchasing condoms and filling them up with fake blood. They put the condoms on top of Mary Jane Higby's head, with a tin plate over it, with her night cap over that. They also put small nails in the rubber hammer, so that it would pop the condoms upon impact.

  • Originally to be directed by Martin Scorsese, but he was replaced after a week of shooting due to creative differences by Donald Volkman who was subsequently replaced by Leonard Kastle. Scorsese was fired because he was filming every scene in master shots and not shooting close-ups or other coverage, making the film impossible to edit. According to Kastle's interview with the Criterion collection, the ultimate moment that caused Scorsese's firing was trying to get close-up on a coffee-cup lit perfectly for the intended tone.
  • Director François Truffaut called this his favorite American film.
  • The film was banned in Australia in 1971. It was deemed "obscene" by the Australian censorship boards and was re-submitted for release in 1972 after the introduction of Australia's R 18 rating, but was again banned for "violence and indecency". This is notable due to the fact that there is only one real scene of violence in the entire film. The film was finally passed in October 1989 with just an M 15 rating and home video releases proudly display the "Banned" disclaimer on the front cover. A DVD release in the early 2000s would also advertise the fact that the film had been banned.
  • New York City based art-noise-rock band The Honeymoon Killers took their name from this film.
  • In Spain was only released in Madrid and Barcelona in subtitled version.
  • In the late Seventies, an ad appeared in Variety announcing a sequel. Although never produced, the story reportedly would have involved an imagined prison tryst between Ray and Martha while on death row, resulting in the prison birth of brother/sister twins who were separated as infants. Years later the pair team up as adult murderers/lovers, never suspecting they were actually related.
