- The tagline "Of all the worlds in all the galaxies...why'd the pick this one?" is a parody of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart)'s famous line "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine," from the 1942 classic *Casablanca*.
- R.E.M.'s song "1,000,000", from their 1982 debut EP *Chronic Town*, is included in the movie, making this the first time their music would appear in a feature film.
- Won for "Best Cinematography" at the 1983 Fantafestival in Rome, Italy.
