  • Because Ed Wood's friendship with Bela Lugosi was the heart of the story, Wood's non-Lugosi productions were ignored.
  • The writers created "meet cutes" to explain how Ed assembled his casts, since it wasn't known how the real Ed Wood actually met these people.
  • American professional wrestler/actor George "The Animal" Steele took accent lessons for his portrayal of Swedish professional wrestler/actor Tor Johnson.
  • Martin Landau won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi, surpassing Lugosi himself, since he never received a nomination. Rick Baker, Ve Neill, and Yolanda Toussieng also won for "Best Makeup."
  • Ed's encounter with Orson Welles was invented for the film, since they were both dealing with the same problems (raising money, shooting in pieces, dealing with executive meddling).
