The Japanese film genre known as Kaiju ("strange beast" in Japanese) is a subgenre of science fiction that features giant monsters wreaking havoc on cities like Tokyo and Osaka. The film that introduced the genre to international audiences was Gojira (1954) which was later redubbed/edited into English and released as Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Soon there were sequels made and other movies with giant monsters like Mothra, Rodan, Ghidrah and Gamera. Since the early days of Kaiju cinema there have been hundreds of incarnations and reboots made. America, China, Korea and Europe also made their own versions of the giant monster movies. This guide is an introduction to the world of kaiju cinema. Every film is not listed on this page but we've selected several classics to get you started.
