RKO Radio Pictures was founded in 1928 and was one of the original Big Five studios of Hollywood's Golden Age. Early on, it became famous for musicals and screwball comedies, and, later, for Film Noir and Val Lewton's series of horror movies. Hollywood icons such as Katharine Hepburn and Robert Mitchum found their first success with RKO and Cary Grant was a mainstay for years. RKO released such iconic films as Citizen Kane, King Kong, It's A Wonderful Life, and a series of films starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The studio put a strong emphasis on B Movies during the 1940s. Howard Hughes taking control in 1948 led to the company's worst years since the early 1930s. The studio finally shut down in 1959.
