The company was founded in 1942 as a distributor for foreign films. Their first production was 1945's Gaslight Follies, a compilation of silent film clips. Their breakthrough hit was 1958's Hercules, which led to the growth of the Peplum genre. Their first Oscar Winner was Sophia Loren, who won Best Actress for 1960's Two Women. In 1963, they made a deal with Paramount Pictures. The Carpetbagger and Nevada Smith were hits but Harlow was not. They also produced animated comedies with Rankin/Bass such as The Daydreamer and Mad Monster Party?. The success of The Graduate made it possible for Levine to sell the company to AVCO.

In 1984, Fanny and Alexander won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

A version of the second logo was used by Embassy Television from 1982 to 1984.

Their library has been owned by a variety of companies due to these companies going bankrupt.
