  • Added to the National Film Registry in 1993.
  • Remade by Paul Schrader in 1982 starring Nastassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowell and John Heard.
  • Included on critic Roger Ebert's "Great Movies" list.
  • Innovated the "Lewton bus", named for producer Val Lewton, or "cat scare" trick.
  • The film stayed in theaters for so long that those critics who had originally bashed it were able to see it a second time and give it an improved review.
