  • While the band's story is completely fictional, McKean, Guest and Shearer actually did write, sing and play the songs.
  • The sit-down interview segments are meant as a parody of Martin Scorsese's 1978 documentary The Last Waltz, about the original "last" concert of The Band.
  • Many real-life rock stars have acknowledged how accurate the film is. Ozzy Osbourne has said that it might as well have been an actual documentary. Tom Waits couldn't even look at it. Ann Wilson of Heart said that she watched it and thought, "Oh my God, that's me!" Aerosmith's Steven Tyler took it personally, since it came out when the band was at its lowest point.
  • It is one of the most quoted, quotable and memetic films of all time. In 2003, Entertainment Weekly ranked it #1 on their list of "The Top 50 Cult Films."
  • Added to the National Film Registry in 2002.
