  • Completed in 1979, it had to wait until 1980 to be released because the studio had no idea how to market it because it didn't fit into one particular genre.
  • Director Richard Rush suffered two heart attacks over the course of the production.
  • Although it is based on a novel, Wikipedia only has a page for the movie.
  • Columbia Pictures originally announced plans to make the film in 1970, with William Castle as the producer and Frederick Wiseman assigned as director.
  • Richard Rush was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director, but the film was not nominated for Best Picture. Rush lost to Robert Redford for Ordinary People.
