Exploitation movies usually exploit something to sell the film, whether it appears in the actual movie or not (like Bruce Lee Fights Back From the Grave, a film that has nothing to do with Bruce Lee at all). God Told Me To is totally different because it exploits...well, something that spoils your fun in watching it.

The film is about a detective name Peter Nicholas who tries to solve mysterious murders that are happening in New York City in which the different criminals' claim "God Told Me To". Well, it looks like another religious/crime movie, right? No! The story gets weirder and weirder as it goes on and the final scene is twisted and shocking.

The dialogue is pretty decent and there's usually a murder every 5-10 minutes of the film, which makes us curious what's going to come next. The story isn't perfect, it's confusing and there are some plot holes since there's a rumor that the director Larry Cohen scrambled five unfinished movie scripts together to make the film. That's why we see a lot of different elements that might appear in Crime, Blaxploitation or (*cough* SPOILER ALERT *cough*) a Sci-Fi movie.

Remember what I said in the first paragraph about the marketing that spoils the fun? That's because it reveals the awesome premise of the film. The best way to watch this film going in is you shouldn't see the poster or at least the tagline! I know it sounds silly, but the marketing department of New World Pictures is gonna spoil you with some plot elements.

Overall, God Told Me To is cheesy but very interesting at the same time. It's an underrated gem that keeps you entertained (and shocked) for sure.
