- The film won the Australian Film Institute Best Achievement In Editing Award (Edward McQueen-Mason), and was nominated for Best Direction (Tim Burstall, losing to Fred Schepisi for The Devil's Playground) and Best Actor in a Lead Role (George Mallaby, losing to Nick Tate and Simon Burke, who co-won for The Devil's Playground).
- The original 1972 novel by Russell Braddon was set in England but the story was relocated for Victoria, Australia for the movie. Braddon himself was born in Australia.
