Daiei Studios was a Japanese film company founded in 1942. It covered a wide range of genres, everything from Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon to the Gamera series to the Zatoichi series. Rashomon won the Grand Prize at the 12th Venice Film Festival in September 1951, introducing Japanese cinema to the world. Gate of Hell earned an honorary Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Their golden era ended in 1971 when they declared bankruptcy.
