DVD Review

The Warner Brothers Home Video DVD for Superfly is packed with some really nice extra features for fans of the film. The picture is presented in (1:85:1) Widescreen. The transfer is very nice. Colors are bright and contrasts and sharp. The mono Dolby Digital audio comes through clear. Turn it up and get funky with Curtis Mayfield's music!

One Last Deal: A Retrospective - The cast and crew of the 1972 Blaxploitation classic take a look back on the making of the film and the cultural impact the film has had since its release. Featuring Co-stars Julius W. Harris & Sheila Frazier, Producer Sig Shore, Writer Philip Fenty and USC Professor of Cinema Dr. Todd Boyd. An excellent featurette.

Audio Commentary by Dr. Todd Boyd: An in-depth examination of the film by USC Film professor that the gives the viewer more information on where the film came from, the realistic portrayals of the underworld characters. Dr. Boyd makes this running commentary a fun analysis by keeping it real and easy to listen to.

Ron O'Neal: Making of Super Fly: A very cool, but brief promotional interview featurette with star Ron O'Neal from the Warner Brothers Studio Archives. This was made immediately after Super Fly became a very popular hit in theaters. O'Neal talks about the Youngblood Priest character, his acting career and how he is regarded as an icon to young black people. We get to see Ron hit the streets, meet fans and sign autographs.

Behind The Threads: Costume Designer Nate Adams discusses the fashion in Super Fly. The film is especially known for its very flamboyant but reality based clothing styles. The hats, the coats reflect the hustler's look in the city in the early 1970s. All these details make the movie all the more true to form.

Curtis Mayfield on Super Fly: An audio recording of Curtis talking about working on the score for the movie and his thoughts on the film.

Final Word: The WB Home Video Superfly DVD gets The GCDb's highest approval and recommendation to both longtime fans of Blaxploitation and for newbies who are just getting into this kind of cinema. You won't be dissapointed with this supercool DVD release of Super Fly!
